This has been my dream car since the age of 5, and today I got so close I could touch it. There were no barriers, no people wiping it down with rags, no concours judges, none of that bullshit. AND I got to see it start up and drive. The sound was the greatest thing I’ve ever heard. As you can see, there was a crowd of people surrounding it. No other car has ever made my legs quake with excitement like hearing the Cobra start up, and literally everyone around it, besides the poor guy tusted with driving this thing up to the auction block, had the same reaction. Seeing the Cobra was like watching an amazing porno which ends with Jesus giving the porn stars a high five and they all go to party at the Loch Ness Monsters house and get a perfectly safe and undeadly high off of Heroin. Imagine what driving it would be like. The greatest thing was this was at a huge car auction, with a varied selection; never before has a Shelby Cobra been in the sams building as a Toyota Sera, Pontiac Fiero, Jeep Jeepster Commando, and Mitsubishi Delica Super Exceed. 10/10 day.

I’ve only seen one that I could confirm as real. It was driving on Alligator Alley. It wasn’t perfect looking; had a nice, well loved worn look too it. It sounded amazing. And on the back, a sticker that read “Dan Gurney For President”.

My father was a Kirkham dealer up until I was in college, so we always had a few really pricey nut-and-bolt aluminum copies in the shop, and an occasional original in for work. I tracked one years ago and would be quite happy to never do it again. It was a stupendously powerful lumber cart. It really felt to me like an old Jeep CJ with way too much power. The brakes were hard impossible to modulate, the shifter position was all sorts of wrong, and the pedal box was tight. I’ve been told that they were considered farm equipment when they were new, too. At least they’re pretty!

Oh, by all standards, it’s a horrible car. But look at it. It’d soooo awesome!

The sound is what really makes it. I’ve never heard a car that literally made the ground shake. It could have been my idealistic perception, but still; it’s glorious.

The 60's GT races are always the ones to watch at the Monterey Historics, the Cobras are just brutal with open pipes and you can get close to them in the paddock. Thundering orgasms everywhere.
